$CLOUT Poetry - I Watched a Wrinkle Appear
A poem about an inevitable truth we all must face.
I’m present in a stitch in time
As I watched a wrinkle appear
On the face looking back at me in the bathroom mirror
As my fingers pushed moisture into its curves
Hoping it would resuscitate new vigour into them
Upon removing my right palm
I was met with a thin reminder
Within a fold of skin
Thin and tired
It hadn’t sprung back like it usually did
But unfolded to reveal it;
The birthday of the wrinkle
It’s now a permanent member
Of a family that we are all born into
And has started moving its possessions
Into its forever home
Beneath my right eye
It’s up to my hands to do the tidying
Because the wrinkle does nothing
But exist on my face
And remind me that my fleshy vessel is finite
Others cast gazes upon the skin
That has seen more years than their own eyes
And holds it in content
For merely choosing to exist
And wanting to carry on its journey
Just like my wrinkle
Because they are afraid of it
Afraid of faces that hold residency for wrinkles
Because they are markings of the end
That is bound to come for all of us
The end of being valuable for the wrong reasons
And the beginning of being perpetually decommissioned
From what we have spent lifetimes working on
When I watched a wrinkle appear
I watched a part of myself disappear.
