$CLOUT Poetry - Happy (Should Be) Birthday to You, Lockdown
A poem marking the 1 year since Matt Hancock’s COVID-19 warning to Boris Johnson fell on deaf ears.
Happy birthday to you
That’s where pleasantries end
Because the year that’s lived through us
Was never a friend
To the man who stands in ruin
Ruling a locked up nation
Who cast their weary eyes
To foreign revelation
The ignorance of your ears
Sums up an entire deafened year
To which your mouth spoke in riddles
That perpetuated fear
It’s questionable whether one week
Could have changed this horrid blow
But maybe it could prove that you could listen
To those who actually know
You've smacked away olive branches
Of trees, we all could climb
Because you wanted this handled your way
Despite the growing picket line
You’ve taken money from the pockets
Of uniforms living only to serve
Including those who stood at your bedside
Was that what they deserve?
Your actions render you lame
To those needing you the most
The blood’s not on the hands you clap
But will forever stain your post
Today marks a year
Of a world without a clue
To the moment Hancock spoke
Happy (should be) birthday to you.
