$CLOUT Poetry - Thirsty

ramblingrose

A poem about wanting what I can’t have right now.

alternate text

The thirst I have
Can’t be quenched by drinking anything
The liquid would only flow through me
Like an hourglass
Until needing to refill again

I’m thirsty
For the scent of another person
Living on my bedsheets
Lingering there even after washing cycles
Cuddling my short and long-term memories

I’ve tried gulping back filtered water
To at least add moisture to my throat
Before it attempts to speak
Soaking the cracks
In the now barren patch of dirt

I’ll keep drinking
Even if it seems to be in vain right now
I need to remind myself that it’s not
Because flowers can’t grow
In dirt that’s too dry

The thirst remains
My hands only hold the air’s friction
My mind only imagines another
My double bed sleeps one
And my heart beats only for itself.
